Subclass 407 Training Visa: Streams, Training Plan and Who It Suits

For engineers, the first two are the relevant ones. The registration stream is useful where an Australian or home-country professional body requires supervised workplace training; the skills stream is the broader option where an Australian employer will host structured training in your occupation.

You cannot apply for a 407 by yourself. The process has three parts, usually running in sequence:

1. Sponsorship. An Australian organisation is approved as a temporary activities sponsor (or is already one).
2. Nomination. That sponsor nominates you for a specific training programme, supported by the training plan.
3. Visa application. You apply, referencing the approved nomination.

The sponsor carries real obligations — to deliver the training as described, to keep records, and to cooperate with monitoring. An employer who treats the 407 as a cheap way to obtain labour rather than to deliver training is a risk to your application and to your stay.

This is where 407 applications succeed or fail. The plan must describe structured training, not ordinary employment. A decision-maker is looking for:

• Specific skills to be developed, and the gap they address
• A schedule — what happens in which month, and for how many hours
• Who supervises, and their qualifications
• How progress is assessed
• The outcome: what the trainee will be able to do at the end that they cannot do now

A plan that reads like a job description will be refused. "The applicant will work as a graduate engineer performing design tasks" is employment. "Weeks 1–6: supervised application of AS 3600 to reinforced concrete member design, with weekly design review by a CPEng supervisor and a written competency assessment at week 6" is training.

The plan should also be consistent with your existing qualification and experience — you cannot be trained in what you already demonstrably do, and you cannot be trained far beyond your level either.

• Experience or qualification relevant to the training, typically demonstrated over the preceding period.
• English at the level required for your stream, from a recognised test.
• Health insurance for the period of stay.
• Genuine temporary entrant — you must intend to stay temporarily.
• Health and character requirements.

Fees, English thresholds and the maximum period of stay are set by the Department and change. Verify each on the Home Affairs website before you plan around them.

Sometimes, and it is often misunderstood. It is not a general work visa and it is not a shortcut to permanent residence — the 407 is temporary, tied to a training programme, and does not itself lead anywhere permanent.

Where it genuinely helps:

• You need supervised Australian workplace training to satisfy a registration requirement.
• An Australian employer is willing to host structured training and you want documented local experience before pursuing a points-tested visa.
• Your points score is not yet competitive and you want to build Australian skilled employment — though note that time on a 407 is training, and whether it counts as skilled employment for points depends on the facts.

Where it does not help: if what you actually want is a job, the honest routes are the subclass 494, the subclass 482, or a points-tested visa after a skills assessment.
