What the NER is, and who needs it
The NER is a public, searchable register of engineers who have been independently assessed as meeting Stage 2 competency — the standard for independent professional practice, a level above the Stage 1 standard used for migration.
You need it if you want to work on projects where registration is mandated. That increasingly includes Commonwealth and state government work, and it feeds into statutory registration schemes such as those operating in Victoria and Queensland. It is also a public credibility marker: clients and employers search the register.
Eligibility
Broadly, you need an accredited or recognised engineering qualification, a period of professional practice at an independent level, evidence of current CPD, and referees who can attest to your practice. Engineers Australia publishes the current requirement — including the years of experience and CPD hours — on its own site, and it is worth reading before you start assembling evidence.
Migrating engineers frequently qualify sooner than they expect. Overseas practice counts, provided it can be evidenced and the competencies are demonstrable.
