Engineers Australia Fees: The Full Cost of a Skills Assessment

What an Engineers Australia skills assessment actually costs: fees by service type, when fast track earns its premium, and the costs people forget.

Quick answer

Engineers Australia Fees: The Full Cost: the short answer

Engineers Australia charges per service, not per applicant: the migration skills assessment itself, fast track as a premium on top, the Relevant Skilled Employment Assessment, additional occupations, and reviews. Fees are revised annually and published on their own site — take the figure on the day you pay.

How the fees are structured

Engineers Australia charges per service, not per applicant. That surprises people who budget for a single line.

ServiceWhat it covers
Migration Skills AssessmentThe core assessment of your qualification against one nominated occupation
Fast TrackPriority in the queue, charged on top of the standard fee
Relevant Skilled Employment AssessmentDetermines how many years of your work count as skilled
Additional occupationAssessing a second ANZSCO code
Review / appealRe-examination after an unexpected outcome
Overseas PhD assessmentWhere a doctorate is assessed for points

We deliberately do not republish the amounts. They are revised annually, and a figure copied from a third-party page — including this one — is out of date the moment the schedule changes. Take the number from the Engineers Australia fee page on the day you pay.

Is fast track worth the premium?

Fast track buys queue position and nothing else. The assessment standard is identical, the assessors are the same, and a weak report simply receives its negative outcome sooner.

Worth it when a deadline is genuinely binding:

  • An age bracket you are about to leave — crossing 33 costs 5 points, crossing 40 costs 10
  • An English test result approaching expiry
  • A state nomination round closing
  • A partner's visa timeline you have to align with

Not worth it when: you have no fixed deadline, or — more importantly — your report is not yet strong. Paying to be assessed sooner on a weak CDR brings the rejection forward and costs you the premium as well as the base fee.

Spend on the report first, the queue second. A rejected fast-track assessment costs both fees and a resubmission cycle.

The Relevant Skilled Employment Assessment

A separate paid application, and the one most applicants either skip or misunderstand.

The migration skills assessment says your qualification meets the standard. The RSEA says how many years of your employment count as skilled in your nominated occupation. The Department relies on that determination for employment points.

Without it, any employment points you claim in an EOI are an estimate. With eight years of work you might assume 15 points; the assessment might recognise five years and give you 10.

When it is worth doing: whenever employment points would change your total meaningfully — which for most applicants with more than three years of experience, they would. Model the difference in the points calculator before deciding.

When to do it: alongside or shortly after the main assessment, not after you have already lodged an EOI claiming points you have not verified. See calculating your points honestly.

The costs applicants forget

The assessment fee is rarely the largest line. A realistic budget includes:

ItemWhy it appears
English testRequired for assessment and for points. Many applicants sit it more than once chasing Superior.
Document certificationDegree, transcripts and references usually need certified copies
TranslationAnything not in English, by an accredited translator, submitted with the original
Transcript reissueUniversities charge, and some take weeks
CDR preparation or reviewOptional, but a review costs a fraction of a resubmission cycle
Second occupationWhere two codes are plausible and state nomination differs
Visa application chargeLater, but far larger than everything above — budget for it early

For applicants outside major cities, add travel to an English test centre and to a certifying authority. Those are small individually and add up.

Nothing is refunded once assessment begins

This is the fact that should shape the whole budget.

Once Engineers Australia has commenced assessment, the fee is not returned — whatever the outcome. A negative result costs the fee and the time, and a resubmission cycle typically runs months. For many applicants those months mean an English result expiring, an EOI running down, or an age bracket closing.

Set against that, the cheapest item in the entire process is checking the report before it goes. A pre-submission review catches the things that actually cause negatives: text-matching hits you did not know about, competency elements with no evidence, summary statement references that do not hold up, and episodes describing a project rather than an engineer.

The asymmetry is stark. A review costs a fraction of the assessment fee. A negative outcome costs the fee, the review you did not buy, and a quarter of a year.

A worked budget

An offshore engineer applying for one occupation, no complications:

  1. English test — often twice, chasing Superior English for 20 points
  2. Transcripts and certification — reissue, certify, courier
  3. Translation if applicable
  4. CDR preparation or review
  5. Migration Skills Assessment fee
  6. Relevant Skilled Employment Assessment where employment points matter
  7. Visa application charge — the largest single item, payable after invitation, and rising with each family member
  8. Health examinations and police certificates for every applicant

Items 1 to 6 are the assessment phase. Items 7 and 8 are the visa phase and dwarf them. Applicants who budget only for the assessment are frequently caught by the visa charge arriving with a 60-day clock attached.

Full sequence and timing in the assessment process guide.

Budgeting for the whole assessment, not just the fee

The application fee is the visible cost and rarely the largest one. Planning around it alone is how people get caught short at the point where delay is most expensive.

CostNotes
Assessment application feeCheck the current schedule; it changes
English testOften sat more than once; budget for two attempts
Document translationPer page, and transcripts run long
Certified copiesSmall per document, adds up across a full pack
Report preparation helpOptional; varies widely
Relevant Skilled Employment assessmentSeparate fee if you need it for points
Fast trackOptional, and only worth it under a real deadline

Two practical points. First, the English test is the one people repeat — if you are chasing a superior-English points band, plan for more than one sitting rather than treating a second attempt as a failure. Second, fast track is rarely worth buying speculatively; it makes sense against an actual deadline such as an invitation round or an expiring test result, and not otherwise.

A last note on payment itself: pay through the official Engineers Australia portal and nowhere else. Requests to transfer an assessment fee to a personal account, or to a third party promising to "submit on your behalf", are a recurring scam aimed at exactly this stage of the process.

Always confirm current amounts on the Engineers Australia site before you transfer anything. Fees are reviewed regularly and any figure quoted on a third-party page, including this one, may be behind.

Verify before you act

Migration rules, occupation lists, fees and processing times change. This post was last reviewed on 2 November 2026. Confirm current requirements with Engineers Australia, the ACS or the Department of Home Affairs before lodging anything, and seek advice from a registered migration agent (MARA) for immigration matters.

Frequently asked questions

How much is the Engineers Australia skills assessment fee?

Engineers Australia sets its fees annually and publishes them on its own website, charged per service — the assessment itself, fast track, Relevant Skilled Employment Assessment, additional occupations and reviews. Confirm the current figure on their fee page before paying rather than relying on any third-party number.

Is the fee refundable if I get a negative outcome?

No. Once assessment has commenced the fee is not refunded, whatever the result. That non-refundability is why a pre-submission review is the highest-return spend in the process.

Do I need the Relevant Skilled Employment Assessment?

You need it if you intend to claim points for skilled employment, because the Department relies on Engineers Australia's determination of how many years count. Without it, any employment points you claim are an estimate rather than a verified figure.

Does fast track improve my chances?

No. It buys queue position only — the assessment standard and the assessors are identical. A weak report simply receives its negative outcome sooner, having cost the premium as well as the base fee.

What is the biggest cost in the whole process?

The visa application charge, payable after invitation, which is substantially larger than the assessment fee and rises with each family member included. Applicants who budget only for the assessment are often caught by it arriving with a 60-day deadline.

Not sure your CDR is ready to submit?

Send it to us. A qualified engineer in your discipline reviews it against the MSA booklet and the Stage 1 competencies, runs a plagiarism scan, and tells you plainly what to fix — before you pay a non-refundable assessment fee.
