Quick answer
How to Calculate Your PR Points Honestly: the short answer
Score only what you can document. The most common over-claims are counting calendar years instead of assessed skilled years, missing the 20-point combined employment cap, and claiming partner points without a partner skills assessment. Nothing is checked at the EOI stage — verification happens at the visa, where an unsupported claim means refusal.
Why an honest score beats an optimistic one
The Australian system creates a specific temptation. You self-declare your points in an Expression of Interest, nothing is checked, and a higher number means a better rank. Over-claiming feels costless.
It is not. The check simply happens later, and by then you have paid.
After an invitation you lodge the visa application, pay a substantial charge, and upload evidence for every claim. A case officer compares the two. Where a claim is unsupported the consequences are:
- Refusal of the application
- Loss of the application charge, which is not refunded
- Where the false information was material, a potential exclusion period during which you cannot apply again
An honest 75 that survives evidence is worth more than an optimistic 85 that collapses. And there is a second cost: an invitation you cannot use consumes months you could have spent actually raising your score.
Assessed employment, not calendar employment
This is the single most common error, and it is often worth 10 or 15 points.
"Skilled employment" does not mean years you worked. It means years your assessing authority accepted as skilled, in your nominated occupation, within the last ten years.
For ACS applicants the gap is dramatic. The ACS deducts two to six years as a "skill-met date" depending on how closely your qualification matches your occupation:
| Qualification | Deducted |
|---|---|
| Bachelor+, ICT major, closely related | 2 years |
| Bachelor+, ICT major, not closely related | 4 years |
| Bachelor+, ICT minor, closely related | 5 years |
| Non-ICT qualification with an RPL | 6 years |
Eight years of work with a non-ICT degree is two assessed years, not eight.
For Engineers Australia applicants the equivalent is the Relevant Skilled Employment Assessment — a separate paid application that determines how many of your years count. Until you hold one, any employment points you claim are a guess.
The caps and windows people miss
- The 20-point employment cap. Overseas maxes at 15 and Australian at 20, and applicants add them to 35. The combined score is capped at 20. Years beyond the cap add nothing.
- The ten-year window. Skilled employment is counted within the last ten years. Work from fifteen years ago adds nothing regardless of relevance.
- Age at invitation, not lodgement. Turning 33 in the pool costs 5 points; turning 40 costs 10. Plan on the score you will hold when invited.
- Qualifications must be assessed as comparable. A masters that has not been assessed to the Australian level is not automatically 15 points.
- Partner points need a partner assessment. The 10-point category requires a positive skills assessment for your partner, not merely a relevant degree.
Work through them in the points calculator, which applies the cap for you.
Evidence, claim by claim
Before you enter a number, ask what document proves it.
| Claim | What proves it |
|---|---|
| Age | Passport |
| English | Test result within validity |
| Skilled employment | Assessment outcome, plus references stating dates, hours and duties, payslips and tax records |
| Qualifications | Certificates, transcripts, and the assessment recognising the level |
| Australian study | Completion letters and transcripts meeting the two-academic-year requirement |
| Partner skills | Their skills assessment and English result |
| Community language | NAATI credential at the required level |
If a row has no document, the points are not yours yet. That is not pessimism — it is the same test a case officer will apply, just earlier and for free.
Recalculating as things change
Your score is not fixed at lodgement, and both directions matter.
Upward changes should be entered promptly. A better English result, another year of assessed employment, a partner's assessment, a state nomination. Ranking is points first and only then the date you reached that score, so raising it moves you into a higher tier — updating never costs you your place.
Downward changes must be entered too. A relationship ending, an age bracket crossed, an English result expiring. Being invited on a score you no longer hold leads to refusal at the visa stage, which is a worse outcome than not being invited at all.
Set a reminder to re-check your score every few months, and to review the published invitation round data for your occupation at the same time. If the recent minimum invited sits more than about five points above you, the answer is not patience.
Where the honest gains are
Having scored yourself accurately, the levers in order of return:
- Superior English (+20 from Competent, +10 from Proficient). Cheapest and fastest, entirely in your control. Most engineers sitting at Proficient have never seriously prepared for Superior.
- Regional nomination (+15). The largest single bonus. "Regional" covers everywhere except Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane — including Perth, Adelaide, Newcastle and the Gold Coast.
- Partner skills assessment (+10, or +5 for English alone). Often the fastest route for a couple sitting five points short.
- State nomination (+5). Requires your occupation on that state's own list.
- NAATI community language (+5). Real effort, permanent points.
Every one of these is documentable. That is the point — they raise your score and they survive the visa stage.
A worked example
An engineer, 34, with a four-year mechanical degree from a non-accord country and nine years of experience — seven overseas, two in Australia. Competent English. Married; partner has a bachelor degree and no skills assessment.
| Factor | Optimistic self-score | What survives evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Age (34) | 25 | 25 |
| English (Competent) | 0 | 0 |
| Overseas employment | 15 (seven years) | 10 — RSEA assessed five of the seven as skilled |
| Australian employment | 5 (two years) | 5 |
| Employment subtotal | 20 | 15 — under the 20 cap either way |
| Qualification | 15 | 15 |
| Partner | 10 | 0 — no assessment, no Competent English evidence |
| Total | 65 | 55 |
Ten points of difference, and the honest figure is below the minimum to lodge an EOI at all. Discovering that now costs nothing. Discovering it after an invitation costs the visa application charge and possibly an exclusion period.
What this applicant should do is also now obvious: Superior English is worth 20 and takes months, not years; a partner skills assessment is worth up to 10. Either alone changes the picture entirely.
Verify before you act
Migration rules, occupation lists, fees and processing times change. This post was last reviewed on 7 October 2026. Confirm current requirements with Engineers Australia, the ACS or the Department of Home Affairs before lodging anything, and seek advice from a registered migration agent (MARA) for immigration matters.
Frequently asked questions
Should I lodge an EOI with a low score anyway?
It costs nothing and does no harm, provided every claim is one you could evidence. What it should not do is replace working on your score — an EOI sitting well below the recent minimum invited for your occupation will expire at two years without ever being in contention.
Does a migration agent verify my points before I lodge?
A registered agent will review your claims against your documents, which is genuinely valuable — it is the same check a case officer applies, done early. What no agent can do is influence your rank in the pool, since invitations are issued by automated ranking.
Is anything checked when I lodge an EOI?
No. An EOI is a self-declaration and nothing is verified. Verification happens after you are invited, when you lodge the visa application and upload evidence for every claim.
What happens if I claim points I cannot prove?
At the visa stage the application is refused, the application charge is not refunded, and where the false information was material an exclusion period may apply during which you cannot apply again.
How do I know how many years of my employment count?
From your assessing authority. The ACS applies a skill-met date deducting two to six years depending on your qualification; Engineers Australia determines it through a separate Relevant Skilled Employment Assessment. Until you hold that determination, employment points are a guess.
Can I add overseas and Australian employment points together?
They are added, but the combined total is capped at 20 points. Overseas maxes at 15 and Australian at 20 individually, so the two do not stack to 35.
Does updating my EOI reset my position?
No. Ranking is by points first and only then by the date you reached that score, so raising your score moves you into a higher tier. Update promptly in both directions — being invited on a score you no longer hold leads to refusal.
