Australia's resources sector keeps this occupation in demand and near the top of the engineering salary table, with a substantial part of the work in regional areas — which matters, because regional nomination adds 15 points under the subclass 491 and much of Australia outside Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane counts as regional.

Episodes that demonstrate mine design

The distinction assessors draw is between running a mine and designing one. Both are real engineering careers; only the second evidences PE2.3 clearly.

  • A pit, stope or mine plan. You worked from a resource model, applied a cut-off grade, generated and scheduled the design, and the economics or the geotechnical envelope constrained what you could do. Name the software — Surpac, Deswik, Vulcan — but lead with the reasoning.
  • A drill and blast design. Burden and spacing you calculated, powder factor you selected, and the fragmentation or vibration result that made you revise it. Blast vibration limits near communities are a strong PE1.6 opportunity.
  • Ventilation or ground support. Airflow requirements you modelled against a diesel fleet, or a support pattern you designed against measured ground conditions. Both carry specialist knowledge under PE1.3.

Turning production work into evidence

Many applicants come from production rather than technical services. That work counts, provided you write the engineering back into it.

Weak: "I supervised the development crews and ensured production targets were met while maintaining safety standards."

Strong: "Development advance in the decline had fallen to 3.1 m per day against a plan of 4.5 m. I analysed six weeks of shift data and found the loss was concentrated in re-entry delays after firing, not in the cut itself. Recalculating the ventilation clearance time against the measured airflow of 42 m³/s showed the standing 60-minute rule was 22 minutes longer than the contaminant clearance required. I proposed a revised re-entry procedure based on real-time gas monitoring, which the ventilation officer and I trialled over four weeks; advance recovered to 4.3 m per day with no exceedance recorded."

The second version has data, a calculation, a standard practice questioned on engineering grounds, a controlled trial and a measured outcome. It also demonstrates PE3.1 — safety was the constraint, not an afterthought.

Points that catch mining applicants

  • Petroleum experience under the mining code. If your work is wells, reservoirs and completions, nominate 233612. Assessors will not treat the codes as interchangeable.
  • No economic basis. Mine planning without a cut-off grade, a schedule or a cost basis reads as drafting a shape rather than designing a mine.
  • Software output as the argument. A Deswik schedule is the result of your decisions, not a substitute for describing them.

Ventilation and ground control: two episodes hiding in plain sight

Underground applicants often lead with production and treat ventilation and ground control as background. Both are specialist bodies of knowledge under PE1.3, and both produce calculations that are hard to fake — which is exactly why they are persuasive.

Ventilation. Airflow requirement derived from diesel fleet power and statutory dilution rates, network modelled, fan duty selected against a system resistance you calculated, and the change you made when the model disagreed with survey measurements. Add a recirculation or heat problem and you have PE2.1 and PE2.2 as well.

Ground control. A support pattern designed against measured rock mass classification, with the empirical or numerical method you chose and why. Where instrumentation later contradicted the assumption, and you revised the pattern, you also have PE2.2 and a strong PE3.1 opportunity — ground support decisions carry direct consequences for people.

Both topics let you write about engineering judgement under genuine uncertainty, which is a level above describing a completed design.

The regional advantage mining applicants should not ignore

Most Australian mining work sits in designated regional areas, and "regional" is defined far more generously than applicants expect — everywhere except Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane. Perth, Adelaide, Newcastle, Wollongong, Townsville and Kalgoorlie all qualify.

That matters because the subclass 491 adds 15 points, more than any other nomination, and leads to permanent residence through the subclass 191 after three years of compliance. For a mining engineer whose employment will be regional anyway, the trade-off that deters other applicants barely exists.

The subclass 494 is the other regional route, employer-sponsored rather than points-tested, and resource companies are established sponsors. It needs three years of relevant post-qualification experience and a positive skills assessment — so the CDR comes first either way.

Evidence problems specific to mining careers

Three patterns cause more trouble in mining than in other disciplines.

Contractor churn. Mining careers often run through several contractors on the same site. Get reference letters while people still remember you, and make sure each states duties rather than just confirming attendance.

Roster arithmetic. FIFO rosters make "full-time" ambiguous. Reference letters should state hours per week or the roster worked, because the assessor cannot infer it and skilled employment claims depend on it.

Confidentiality. Resource models, reserves and costs are commercially sensitive. You can write a strong episode without disclosing them — describe the method, the constraint and the decision, and use relative rather than absolute figures where you must. What you cannot do is omit the engineering because the numbers are confidential.

Choosing between mining and the codes around it

Mining careers touch several disciplines, and the nomination has to match the work rather than the industry.

Geotechnical is the boundary that causes most trouble. A mining engineer who has spent five years on slope stability and pit wall design has stronger evidence under 233212 than under 233611, and the assessor will read the episodes that way regardless of the job title on the payslip.

A pre-submission checklist for mining applicants

  • Does at least one episode contain a plan or design you produced, not a plan you executed?
  • Is there an economic or geotechnical constraint stated that governed your design — cut-off grade, dilution, stability, ventilation capacity?
  • Have you named the method as well as the software? "Scheduled in Deswik" is a tool; "sequenced to maintain a 6-month development lead against the stope availability model" is engineering.
  • Do the three episodes cover different competency elements, or three variations of production supervision?
  • Do your reference letters state hours or roster, so a FIFO arrangement is not read as part-time?
  • Have you kept commercially sensitive figures out while keeping the engineering in?
  • Has the whole report been text-matched before submission?
