Engineers Australia ANZSCO Codes: the short answer
ANZSCO assigns every occupation a six-digit code and a skill level from 1 to 5. Engineers Australia assesses the engineering codes in groups 233, 263311, 263312, 312 and 133211; the ACS assesses the 261xxx and 263111 ICT codes. Your nominated code decides your assessing authority, visa eligibility and state nomination options.
Reading a code
Take 233211 Civil Engineer. Each pair of digits narrows the classification:

Separately, every occupation carries a skill level from 1 to 5. Level 1 means a bachelor degree or higher is normally required. Nearly all 233xxx engineering occupations are Level 1; the 312xxx draftsperson and technician occupations are Level 2.

Codes that go to the ACS instead
This is where applicants lose months. These occupations are assessed by the Australian Computer Society and require an RPL report, not a CDR:
- 261111 ICT Business Analyst
- 261211 Multimedia Specialist
- 261311 Analyst Programmer
- 261312 Developer Programmer
- 261313 Software Engineer
- 263111 Computer Network and Systems Engineer
Note the traps. 261313 Software Engineer has "Engineer" in the title and is still an ACS occupation. 263111 Computer Network and Systems Engineer goes to the ACS, while 263311 and 263312 Telecommunications codes go to Engineers Australia — three codes, same 263 prefix, two different authorities.

How to choose when two codes could fit
- Read both ANZSCO descriptions and mark the tasks you actually performed. Not the ones your title implies — the ones you did.
- Check your degree. A civil degree makes a structural nomination straightforward; a mechanical degree makes it hard to defend.
- Check the occupation lists. A code on the MLTSSL keeps the subclass 189 available; an STSOL code does not. But never nominate a code your evidence cannot support just because the list is better.
- Check state nomination lists for every state you would realistically move to.
- Read your own reference letters. If they describe the duties of code A, nominating code B creates a contradiction the assessor will find.
An assessment covers one occupation. Adding a second later means a further fee and, often, rewritten career episodes — because the episodes must evidence the duties of the code you nominate.
What the skill level actually controls
The skill level is separate from the code and it is not a quality judgement. It describes the qualification normally required for entry to the occupation, and it has real consequences.

Level 1 codes are overwhelmingly the ones that appear on the MLTSSL, which is what keeps the subclass 189 available. Level 2 codes have generally sat on the STSOL, requiring state or regional nomination. That single distinction changes your migration strategy more than almost anything else on this page.
A worked example: three codes, one career
Consider an engineer with a four-year mechanical degree who has spent eight years in a food processing plant: two years in the design office sizing conveyors and heat exchangers, four years running plant upgrades and reliability improvement, and two years leading a small team doing line balancing and layout work.
Three codes are defensible, and they lead to different reports:

The right answer is usually where the strongest evidence is, not where the most recent job title points. If the design-office years produced documented calculations and the plant years produced only meeting minutes, nominate 233512 and build the episodes there. And whichever you choose, your reference letters must describe those duties — a contradiction between the letters and the episodes is worse than a slightly imperfect code choice.
Occupation lists change; verify on the day
Every list placement mentioned on this page is a description of how things have stood, not a guarantee. The MLTSSL, STSOL, ROL and CSOL are set by legislative instrument and revised periodically, and third-party pages — including this one — lag the source.
Before you lodge anything, check three things on the day you act:
- Your code's placement on the Department of Home Affairs occupation list for your intended visa subclass
- The specific visa subclass page, because being "on a list" is not the same as being eligible for a given subclass
- Each state or territory's own nomination list, which is narrower and changes more often
Removal does not invalidate an assessment you already hold or an application already lodged. It does prevent a new EOI relying on that occupation for that subclass. Our occupation list guide explains how the four lists relate.
What happens if you nominate the wrong code
There is no single outcome, and knowing the range helps you judge the risk.
Assessed at a different category. The most common result. You nominate Professional Engineer, your qualification supports Engineering Technologist, and the outcome comes back as ET. The assessment is positive; it simply is not the one you planned around.
Negative on occupation match. Your episodes describe work belonging to another occupation. The assessor says so and the outcome is negative. The fee is not refunded.
Refunded by the wrong authority. A CDR sent to the ACS, or an RPL to Engineers Australia, is not assessed at all. The money comes back eventually; the months do not.
A problem at the visa stage. The rarest and worst. The assessment passes, but the Department examines your employment evidence against the nominated occupation and finds the claimed points unsupported.
All four are avoidable at the free-consultation stage, which is why any competent provider confirms your code before taking money. If yours did not ask, that is worth noticing.
