That does not make the assessment easier. Engineers Australia assesses competency, not market demand. But it does mean that if your report is sound, the pathway afterwards is unusually open: 233311 has broad state nomination coverage and one of the deeper employment markets in Australian engineering.

The one thing that costs electrical applicants outcomes is writing about equipment rather than about analysis.

The studies that carry the most weight

The point is not that you used ETAP or DIgSILENT. It is that you chose inputs, ran the case, read a result you did not expect, and did something about it. Software output presented without a check reads as button-pressing.

The single 300 mm² met current rating but returned 4.1% voltage drop at full load against the 2.5% limit in the client brief, so I selected 2×185 mm² in parallel, which gave 2.2% and lifted the fault withstand margin from 1.1 to 1.6."

The second version names the standard, shows the calculation, states the criterion that was breached, compares options and records the decision. That single paragraph does more competency work than a page of the first version.

Episodes that do not work, and how to rescue them

Three patterns cost electrical applicants outcomes:

Pure maintenance. "I maintained the plant's electrical systems and attended breakdowns." Rescue it by finding one fault you diagnosed methodically — measurement, drawings, elimination — and one change you made so it would not recur. That is analysis plus design.

Vendor selection presented as design. Choosing a switchboard from a catalogue is procurement. It becomes engineering when you specify the duty, calculate the requirement the product must meet, and verify the offered product against it.

Commissioning without engineering. Witnessing tests is not evidence. Interpreting a test result that disagreed with the design, and resolving the disagreement, is.

Renewables and grid connection: the richest current source of episodes

If any of your recent work touches renewable generation, storage or grid connection, it is likely the strongest material you have — because the engineering is genuinely analytical and the constraints are documented.

Connection studies in particular map cleanly onto the competency standard. A generator performance standard negotiation involves modelling, a regulatory framework, a technical constraint you did not choose, and a design change. That is PE1.3, PE1.5, PE2.1 and PE2.3 in one project.

Angles worth writing about:

  • Connection studies — steady-state and dynamic performance against a network service provider's requirements, and what you changed when a criterion was not met
  • Reactive power and voltage control — sizing plant to meet a defined capability, and the trade-off against cost or footprint
  • Protection for inverter-based resources — where conventional settings assumptions break down and what you did instead
  • Earthing and step-touch for a substation or solar farm, calculated against measured soil resistivity

The same logic applies to electrification work in mining and transport: high current, real constraints, documented analysis.

Reference letters for electrical engineers

Your episodes and references are read together, and electrical job titles are unhelpfully generic across countries. "Electrical Engineer" tells the assessor nothing about whether you designed or maintained.

Ask for duties phrased in engineering terms: "performed load flow and fault level studies", "produced protection settings and coordination curves", "designed LV and HV distribution to AS/NZS 3000 and AS 2067", "specified and commissioned switchgear". Duties phrased as responsibilities — "responsible for electrical systems" — carry almost no weight.

Two situations need extra care. If you worked for an EPC contractor, make clear which parts of the design you produced rather than reviewed. If you worked in an operating utility, make clear where you did engineering rather than operations, because the assessor cannot infer it from the employer type.

Sequencing your application

A realistic order for an electrical applicant:

  1. Confirm the code and category. Five minutes with the eligibility checker saves months. If your degree is Washington Accord recognised within the coverage period, you may not need a CDR at all.
  2. Book English early. Superior English is 20 points and the cheapest lever on the whole points test.
  3. Gather project records before you draft. Calculation sheets, study reports, single-line diagrams, settings files. The technical detail that satisfies an assessor is in these, not in your CV.
  4. Write, then have it checked. The assessment fee is not refunded on a negative outcome, which makes a pre-submission review the cheapest insurance in the process.
  5. Lodge the EOI the day the outcome arrives, and plan around the fact that your assessment lasts three years while the EOI lasts two.

Standards worth naming in an electrical episode

"Relevant standards" tells an assessor nothing. Naming the document, the clause behind a limit, and the number it produced is what turns a claim into evidence.
