Engineering Pay by State: NSW, VIC, QLD, WA, SA

What drives engineering pay in each Australian state, which disciplines each economy rewards, and how housing costs change the comparison.

Quick answer

Engineering Pay by State: the short answer

Western Australia pays the highest nominal engineering salaries, driven by resources. New South Wales and Victoria pay best in transport infrastructure and building services but have the highest housing costs. Queensland combines resources with infrastructure and requires RPEQ registration, which constrains supply and supports pay.

Why the differences exist

State pay variation in engineering is not noise. It tracks, fairly directly, what each state economy actually builds — and therefore which disciplines are scarce there.

A structural engineer is worth more where there is a metro tunnelling programme. An electrical engineer is worth more where a grid is being rebuilt. A mining engineer is worth more where there are mines. The premiums move as pipelines move, which is why a state that paid best five years ago may not now.

Two forces sit on top of that. Statutory registration constrains supply where it applies. And housing cost quietly erases a good deal of nominal advantage in the biggest cities.

Western Australia

Pays the highest nominal engineering salaries in the country, and it is not close at the top end.

Resources drive it — iron ore, LNG, gold, and increasingly lithium and battery minerals. Perth is the technical and corporate base for all of it. Mining, petroleum, mechanical, electrical and process disciplines all attract a visible premium, and FIFO arrangements add allowances on top of base.

Two things temper the picture. The premium is cyclical — it tracks commodity prices, and downturns have brought widespread redundancies. And much of the best-paid work involves remote sites or FIFO rosters, which is a genuine lifestyle trade rather than free money.

Perth housing costs sit well below Sydney and Melbourne, so real income for a Perth engineer often beats a nominally higher eastern-states figure. Perth is also a designated regional area for migration purposes.

New South Wales and Victoria

The two largest engineering employment markets, driven by sustained metro, rail and building programmes.

Where they pay best: transport infrastructure, tunnelling, structural engineering, building services, and the geotechnical work that underpins all of it. Tunnelling in particular has been persistently short-staffed in both states, and pay reflects that.

What erodes it: housing. Sydney and Melbourne have the highest accommodation costs in Australia by a clear margin, and for an arriving engineer it is the largest line in the budget. A Sydney offer 15% above a Perth or Adelaide equivalent can leave you materially worse off after rent.

Neither Sydney nor Melbourne counts as regional for migration. Newcastle, Wollongong and Geelong do — all three have real engineering markets in heavy industry, defence and infrastructure, and all three are considerably cheaper to live in.

Queensland

Combines a resources sector with a substantial infrastructure programme, which gives it unusual breadth.

Coal, coal seam gas and the Gladstone LNG plants support mining, process and mechanical disciplines. A long-running transport and water infrastructure pipeline supports civil, structural and electrical work. Central and northern Queensland carry remote loading similar to WA.

The distinctive factor is RPEQ registration. Queensland requires registration to provide professional engineering services in the state — it is a legal requirement, not a professional courtesy. That constrains supply directly, and constrained supply is the most reliable mechanism there is for supporting pay.

For a migrating engineer it is worth planning early: registration takes time and evidence, and it is a gate on a substantial part of the state's work. See chartered status, which feeds into it.

Brisbane is not regional for migration. The rest of Queensland is.

South Australia

The state whose engineering profile has changed most in the last decade, because of defence.

Naval shipbuilding has created sustained demand in systems engineering, structural and marine disciplines, electrical, and the project controls functions around them. It is long-cycle work — programmes measured in decades rather than project seasons — which makes it unusually stable compared with resources.

Nominal salaries sit below WA and roughly level with the eastern states. Adelaide housing costs are among the lowest of any Australian capital, so real income frequently exceeds both.

Adelaide is a designated regional area for migration, which combines well: a stable long-cycle employment market, low cost of living, and eligibility for the 491's 15 points.

Adjusting for what you actually keep

A nominal comparison between states is misleading without three corrections.

Housing. The dominant variable. Price an actual rent in the suburb you would realistically live in — not a city average — before comparing two offers.

Allowances versus base. Site, remote, FIFO and living-away allowances can be a large share of a resources package. They stop when the assignment stops; base is what carries into your next role and what future employers benchmark against.

Superannuation. Paid on top of salary at the statutory rate. A "package" figure and a "salary" figure are different numbers, and offers are not always explicit about which is quoted.

The broad pattern once corrected: WA and SA tend to lead on real income, Queensland sits close behind with the registration premium, and NSW and Victoria trade a higher nominal figure for the largest job markets and the highest costs.

Choosing a state on more than pay

Three factors that matter more than a ten-thousand-dollar difference.

Depth of market in your discipline. A single large employer in a small market is a risk. If that programme ends, your options are relocation or a career change. Sydney and Melbourne offer depth; Adelaide and Perth offer depth in specific disciplines and thinness in others.

Migration alignment. Every state except Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane is a designated regional area, worth 15 points under the 491 — more than any other nomination. Each state also publishes its own occupation list with its own criteria, and they differ sharply.

Registration requirements. Queensland's RPEQ and Victoria's scheme gate certain work. If your long-term plan involves signing off designs, factor that into where you land.

The territories, briefly

Small markets, but worth knowing because both are designated regional areas and both have specific demand.

Australian Capital Territory. Canberra's engineering employment is dominated by federal government, defence and the consultancies that serve them. Systems engineering, project controls and civil infrastructure are the strengths. Pay is comparable to the eastern states with lower housing costs than Sydney, and security is unusually good because the client is government.

Northern Territory. Darwin LNG, defence infrastructure and remote civil work. A small market with a genuine remote loading, and one where an individual engineer can be a substantial share of the local capability in their discipline. That is an opportunity and a risk in the same fact.

Both territories nominate for skilled migration, and both have historically had shorter nomination queues than the larger states — worth checking if your occupation appears on their lists.

Verify before you act

Migration rules, occupation lists, fees and processing times change. This post was last reviewed on 16 October 2026. Confirm current requirements with Engineers Australia, the ACS or the Department of Home Affairs before lodging anything, and seek advice from a registered migration agent (MARA) for immigration matters.

Frequently asked questions

Does moving interstate hurt my migration application?

It depends on your visa. A subclass 189 carries no restriction at all. A 190 involves a commitment to the nominating state, usually for two years. A 491 has conditions on the visa itself requiring you to live and work in a designated regional area, and breaching them puts the subclass 191 pathway at risk.

Which Australian state pays engineers the most?

Western Australia pays the highest nominal salaries, driven by resources, with FIFO allowances on top. After adjusting for housing costs, South Australia and Queensland often lead in real terms, since Adelaide and Brisbane are considerably cheaper than Sydney or Melbourne.

Why does Queensland pay well for engineers?

It combines resources with a large infrastructure programme, and it requires RPEQ registration to provide professional engineering services. That registration is a legal requirement, which constrains supply and supports pay.

Is Sydney worth the higher salary?

Often not, once housing is counted. Sydney and Melbourne have the highest accommodation costs in Australia, and a nominal premium of 10 to 15% can leave you worse off in real terms than a Perth or Adelaide role.

Which states count as regional for migration?

All of Australia except Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane. That includes Perth, Adelaide, Canberra, Hobart, Darwin, Newcastle, Wollongong, Geelong and the Gold Coast — all eligible for the subclass 491's 15 points.
